Analysis of specific ions dissolved in water is quick and simple with the help of Ion Selective Electrodes (ISE) or with colorimeters (also known as photometers).
These methods use a chemical reagent that, in the presence of the ion being tested, will develop a colour, the intensity of which is proportional to the concentration of the ion (Beer-Lambert's Law).
The intensity of the colour can be measured visually against a color chart (Test-kit method) or with a photometer (Colorimeter method) for more precision.
Some Test-kits use a titration method (addition of the reactive until there is colour).
The HANNA Instruments line of Ion Specific, micro-processor controlled meters use colorimeter methods. These easy to use, light weight meters are ideal for field measurements.
