General Information about Analytical Sieves
Analytical Sieves (Screens) are defined by 4 criteria:

1. Nominal Sieve Opening
This means the ASTM E-11 or ISO 3310-1 standards.
- ASTM E-11 standard (American Society for Testing Materials)
This is the standard most widely used in North America.
- The opening is defined by a number (number 635 (20 µm) to number 3-1/2 (5.6 mm)), or
in inches (1/4 in. (6.3 mm) to 5 in. (125 mm)).
Note: Tyler had already standardized their sieves before ASTM, so in some cases, the Tyler number might be different than the ASTM number.
- ISO 3310-1 standard (International Standards Organization)
This is the standard used in Canada in the field of construction materials.
- The opening is defined in micrometres (20 µm to 37,500 µm).
2. Diameter
Sieves that conform to current ASTM E-11 standards, have a diameter of 8", 12" and 3".
The 6", 10" and 18" diameters are also available.
Sieves that conform to ISO 3310-1 standards are offered with a 200 mm diameter, and more rarely 400 mm.
3. Height
Analytical Sieves are available in 3 heights (see table below):
- FH = Full Height
- HH = Half Height
- IH = Intermediate Height

4. Material
Sieves are available in 3 material combinations:
- Brass Frame and Brass screen (cloth)
- Brass Frame and Stainless Steel screen/cloth
- Stainless Steel Frame and SS screen
In wet sieving, Stainless Steel Frame and SS Cloth must be used.
