A Particle Size Analysis Guide

 
 

Particle Size Distribution

The properties of certain products are dependent on the dimension or the surface of the particles that they are composed of.
The choice of instrument (or combination of equipment) should take into consideration the following criteria:
  • First - what is the measuring range required (minimum and maximum size of particle)
  • Precision required (determines method of analysis)
  • Quantity of sample to be analysed
  • Time of analysis (number of samples to be analysed daily)
  • Media in which sample can be analysed (dry or in liquid)

Different Methods:

  • Sieve Shaker
    A sieve shaker is the most widely used method for analysis of aggregate or particles larger than 50 µm.
    In some cases, sieves can be used for fine particle analysis (down to 5µm).
    However, this method of analysis requires a relatively long time for analysis (5 to 30 min.)

  • Particle Size Analyzer
    Particle size analyzers are the fastest (approx. 10 sec.) and most precise method of analysis.
    This method is chosen in cases of fine to very fine particle sizes where a large number of analyses are needed.
    When used in combination with sieving analysis, all measuring ranges are possible.
